Vonore Middle Off to a Strong Start
The first day of school was exciting this year, with a visit from Abby Ham with WBIR. Vonore Middle was featured on Channel 10’s Back to School Bash Week, where several of our students and teachers were interviewed. Our new 5th graders have rapidly adjusted to middle school life, and all our students and teachers are getting back into the routine of school.
Mr. Conley would like everyone to know that he has an open door policy to parents and guardians. No appointment is necessary; however he might be in a classroom conducting an evaluation which would require a short wait. Any issue, please e-mail, call, or come for a visit. Email: email@example.com
Beta Club and Band Come to VMS
VMS Guidance Counselor Paula Grant has begun a Jr. Beta Club at Vonore Middle. This is an exciting way to recognize high- achieving students. There will be a Beta Club Induction Ceremony on September 21st at 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. All parents of Beta Club members are invited. We hope to be able to compete in the National Beta Club State Convention in Nashville in November.
Beginning Band has come to VMS! Lynn Phlelps will be teaching part-time at the school two days a week. Mrs. Phelps has over 30 years experience teaching band. The students who take band will be able to go to SQHS and be in the marching band whey they get to high school. Watching and hearing these students learn to play musical instruments is something we are looking forward to.
Work Continues on the Baseball/Softball Field: Help Needed
The work continues on the VMS Baseball/Softball field. It will be ready for spring baseball, and softball next fall. There are a few things still needed to complete the project. 1. The infield needs to be lightly tilled by someone with a tiller and tractor. 2. The dugouts need to have some sort of wall in the front. We have some materials here at school for that, however we need someone with building knowledge.
Our new Assistant Principal Matt Barger is has sprayed and reseeded the outfield. He will also fertilize and spread sand later this fall. The field was leveled by Harold Fowler to allow water to drain properly, so we are close, but still need a few things to get it playable.
Meet Our Staff
Each month we will feature a staff member of our Vonore Middle Family. This month we are introducing our new Physical Education Teacher and Basketball Coach Trey Tatum.
Coach Tatum comes to us from Maryville College where he played basketball for three years, and was a Graduate Assistant Coach. He received his teaching degree from there also, maintaining a high grade point average all four years. He grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he played on an all conference championship team. Coach Tatum has readily fit into the Vonore community, although he had some adjustments to make. “The smallest town I ever lived in was Maryville, so coming to Vonore was a whole different experience. I like how everyone knows each other, and how everyone cares about the school.” Coach Tatum’s goal for Vonore Middle School students is that they learn to appreciate physical activity, even if athletics is not their favorite thing.
